WordPress Goes Mobile

by Lynette

You may already have noticed I’ve been trying to find ways to blog from my PDA without anguish. The ideal situation for me is using an external app like mo:blog that connects in the back end and publishes the entries. I like this best because I use a software like that (ecto) on my laptop and desktop. I don’t use the WordPress interface to blog.

I also like that setup because I can post to multiple blogs and just change the text around a little without having to completely re-write each entry. But mo:blog has it’s problems. The biggest is categories. Maybe I’m just daft but I can’t check which category I’d like to put each entry into. I can only set a default entry for each blog. No can do.

My next best option is Postie. It’s a plugin that allows you to post via email. It’s better than the blog by email feature bundled in WordPress itself because it is more flexible. For example, I can post date the entries and I can specify multiple categories. But this has its challenges too. For one, I can’t use it on blogs where I am guest author.

Secondly, I can’t remember all the categories of all the different blogs. You have to enter the category ID or partial category name. Well, that just doesn’t work too well with mommy brains. So while this it not the best option, this is one working option at least.

But, why can’t I just post right from the PDA browser? I should be able to! The normal WP Dashboard is just a little too ‘heavy’ for my PDA so I was very excited when I found the WordPress Mobile Plugin. I can’t wait to give it a try. Documenting it here so I can find it again. Really hope it won’t mess things up with the search engines, though it claims it won’t. I’ll have it put on here soon.

This is a very interesting topics. Have you ever want to share or write a simple steps by steps article on how to blog using PDA ? If so, I will be first to buyer and reviewer. I have many friends who have not maximise the technology on PDA and web yet.

Hey Pamela, I haven’t thought about that but you gave me a great idea. I just might. There are several options. I did test it out on a sandbox blog and I find it the easiest in terms of implementation. But I currently use other methods because I don’t have a Smart Phone where I can get online and post. So I have to go the other route where I can write on the PDA and only publish when I get wifi access.

    Thanks for the tip!

Sent me your article. I worked for the big (H)igh (P)erformance company. Would definitely like to try your solution on the PDA that I have. I travel much and would to blog on my travel or waiting time.

    Hi Lynette,

Did you discover any search engine ranking problems with this plugin?

  6. Lynette Says:

@Risemoon No. It tries to detect the user based on browser or bots so they will always see only one version. This method is not always fool proof but I don’t see a problem since we aren’t splitting two versions of the site there’s always only one.
