Xbox 360 Arcade Console $149

Hey all, we got news of this recently. Since we are a Wii household and know little about Xboxes, I hope this is a deal because it does sounds like one and we thought we’d pass the info along regardless. Walmart.com is selling the Xbox Arcade Console for only $149. It comes with two free games. Plus you get a $50 Walmart.com eGift card so it is like, paying only $99 for this bundle.

If it is a deal I hope you have a chance to get it before it goes away :-)

Removing Kitchen Odors From Hands With Stainless Steel?

Now that one caught my attention. Last night while puttering around on Facebook, I stumbled on a tip – rub your hands on any stainless steel item like a knife (yikes that sounds dangerous) or the faucet or stainless steel utensil. That sounded really strange to me but it got even weirder. People started commenting and said they use a “Stainless Steel Soap Bar”

Ok. This I have to check out. Turns out there are stainless steel soap bars for sale. They are just a chunk of stainless steel in the shape of a soap bar.

The women swore this works. So, well next time I need to rid my hands of food odors, I’ll give it a go. Not going to purchase that soap bar though.

However this is all kinda interesting to a geek like me. There’s got to be some scientific explanation right? Sadly there isn’t much of that around even online – surprise. There are theories though but nobody really knows.

Your Rain Water Harvesting Plans May Be Illegal

My grandmother had a large metal tub she used to collect rainwater with. We washed with it, used the water in the garden and the bathroom, just about everything short of drinking and cooking. While I gagged at our water bill last year and lamented how much of that water was not being used as drinking water, I was reminded of that tub. From then on, I was on the lookout for large barrels.watertubs

It took me a year but a few weeks ago, my husband and I saw someone loading 55 gallon plastic barrels on his truck. He said he would give it to us. Yes! So we loaded a couple of them onto our truck and brought them home.

While looking for some plans how others rigged their water harvesting system up, I stumbled across a very interesting conversation. Apparently, it could be illegal for us to collect rain water.

WHAT?

Apparently in some states, the state owns the rain water. Try suing them the next time that rain water floods your home but that’s a whole other story.

I decided to do some research on it. True enough. Most states don’t seem to have any legislation or problem about it, but some do. The good news is, other states, encourage it and even give you a tax credit.

One site that is particularly helpful is HarvestH2O.com. They even have a page that lists regulations for each state and even some countries.

I think these laws are crazy though but hey, I don’t want my friends to get in trouble either :) so check before you collect.

10 Ways To Recycle Old Technology

When I was little, we learned how the coconut tree can be used from top to bottom with not one bit of waste. For example, the leaves can be made into mats, the coconut shell into ladles, the trunk into a bridge, the husk into brushes (for cleaning), the coconut flesh and water for drinking or pressed into oil. This made me a huge fan of re-purposing and re-using material even though I’m not a particularly ‘green’ person.

These days, electronic waste is a huge problem. They can be toxic so you can’t just throw them away. Making matters worse, electronics go obsolete so quickly. So how else can one use these older but still good gadgets? Here are 10 Ways I can think of.MythTV

  1. Turn old handhelds into portable ebook readers for everyone in the family. We covered this before.
  2. Re-format old computer hard drives, pop them into external cases to use as storage drives.
  3. Purchase older model phones for a low price then purchase a plan for the phone. This way, you don’t have to commit to a 2 year contract or pay hefty amounts for dropping that contract.
  4. Turn an old laptop into a kitchen command center. This idea is kinda sketchy still, but I believe if you re-format and re-install Windows afresh (or go Linux!), install something like Google Desktop or Yahoo Widgets. Then add Widgets and Gadgets like Sticky Notes, Weather, Lists, Calendars and what nots – whatever you need. Make a space for the laptop where it can be seen and accessed easily. Start adding notes for each family member on it. You might want to lay a soft plastic over the keyboard so you can use it to quickly enter information even when you get your hands a little dirty. Hmmm. I wonder if clingwrap will work. If you try it, let us know how that turns out.
  5. Put your old computer speakers in the bathroom. We did this one since my husband and I love to listen to something (webinars, music etc) in the bathroom, we put a set of un-used computer speakers there, plugged one end of the cord into the speakers and the other into the mp3 player/phone/etc.
  6. Turn an old radio into iPod or MP3 speakers.
  7. Turn an old Nokia cell phone into an awesome multi-use gadget the kids will love.
  8. Make your own DVR from an old computer (or laptop). You might want to try going Linux and installing MythTV.
  9. Control iRobot with an old PalmPilot.
  10. Use an old PalmPilot as a remote control.

Finally, you could always gut the insides and turn them into a flower box :-) Do you have any ideas? How are you repurposing your old gadgets?

Re-usable Senseo Filter The Coffeeduck

A while back, I wrote about making my own Senseo coffee pods. It has worked very well for me and only takes me about 30 seconds to make a pod before popping it into the Senseo. One day I got lazy and thought wouldn’t it be nice if there was a faster way. That’s when I checked into the Coffeeduck. And… I bought it.

Does it work? Yes. But I’m afraid to say it hasn’t been any easier or faster than my home made pods. My home made pods gave me the frothy top like the regular pods did, the Coffeeduck didn’t. It was very minimal. I also found cleaning up after rather messy because there’s a lot of water left in the filter. With my home made pods it was much easier and dry. Filling it also takes practice. You definitely want to make sure the filter is dry before filling because the sides must be 100% free from any coffee crumbs and it’s easier to wipe the crumbs away with a damp cloth if the filter is dry.

Do I regret buying the Coffeeduck? No. Maybe because I’ve had more practice with it by now, and have somewhat mastered filling the filter. Also, I ruined my original two pod filter so the Coffeeduck is a replacement that does two jobs use with coffee beans or regular Senseo pods. I’ve noticed it does give me a stronger cup of coffee – really getting the essence out vs the home made pods and that is always nice when I want a stronger cup.

Overall, if you do not have the problems I did like losing or messing up the original filter, I am not sure this is something I would recommend. Having said that, if you don’t mind practicing and messy clean ups it can be quite handy.

Cute yet functional purse gadgets

Not an electronic gadget for once. I saw these awesome little things in All You magazine. The first is a key finder. They are pretty little hooks that you hang to the side of your purse and the keys go on the inside. Neat idea. This way, you won’t have to rummage all over to find those keys.

From the same company, you’ll also find purse hangers. Forget about putting your purse down on dirty floors at the restaurant. Use this hanger that clamps to the side of your table and voila! A portable hook. I think it would be handy to hang diaper bags and other stuff too, provided it isn’t too heavy. No idea how much weight it will take.

How To Read B&N Free eBooks Without The Nook

Nook, Kindle and soon the iPad all oh so very tempting! But they are also oh so very expensive. This is awful for a geeky chick who is also working hard on being and staying debt free.nookTM by Barnes and Noble, the world's most advanced eBook Reader

But no worries. It is also thank to this geekiness I’ve been able to enjoy several eBooks now from Barnes & Nobles without the luxury of owning a Nook and so can you.

What I’ve done was install the eReader software on my trusty old Palm T|X. You see, eReader is now a B&N company and apparently, are using this technology on the Nook.

eReader also has software for the iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Symbian and a bunch of other devices. But I’m specifically bringing up the Palm because not too long ago, my husband picked up two old but still very good Palm devices at the local thrift store for $10 a piece.

Plus, at B&N, there are free books to be had. So far I’ve read a few and one was absolutely awesome book. I’ve just loaded a few more to enjoy. And yes, I’ve purchased books too. By the way, if you want to buy, I’ve noticed most books tend to be cheaper at B&N itself than on eReader.com.

$10 for a mobile ebook reader plus free ebooks (don’t forget you can read tons of books from Gutenberg too). And most important of all, no more getting in debt feeding the reading and gadget habit.
