Free Online Game For Kids – It’s Healthy Too

wpurltbt-002 Games healthy? Yup. I found Playnormous. It is a really fun site with about 6 games the kids can play. All free. But it’s not just the games. I like what is in the game. I just played Lunch Crunch where you score points for filling the children’s lunch trays with healthier food options. It was pretty fun.

There’s a bunch more games that related to choices of food, exercise and testing their knowledge on staying healthy. You can also purchase the games on CD. I also spotted some recipes the kids can make.

I’m going to put this in our approved games bookmark list for my children. Something good to occupy them during rainy summer days.

Looking To Living Off The Grid

The hottest (and coldest) months of the year always remind me to look for ways to cut our energy costs. One of the things that my husband and I have always looked forward to is making our own energy. For starters, we just want to power a few key appliances in the house.

Solar-Panels

Ideally, we’d like to stick it to the power company and say good riddance and live off the grid. But can we? I don’t know, we are so conditioned to buying our power that this idea itself is quite scary. That’s why we hope to be able to start small and see how the land lays from there.

All is not lovely in the land of renewable home energy either. Have you seen the prices of some of these things? Sheesh… I know, I know. You pay a high price but you save in the long run, many times more. I get that. Still… I’m a cheapskate and we’re geeky. We like to make things especially on the cheap.

I found this Home Made Energy guide that shows you how to make your own solar power system and/or wind power system for as low as $100. Going to send it off to hubby to see if I can convince him to give the guide a go.

Have you built your own energy system? How did it go? Any words of advise?

Getting Mobile Internet Access

There’s so much of our lives tied to services on the Internet these days it is hard to completely disconnect. It’s not just about checking emails or social networks. I like the ability to capture and save bits and pieces of information on Evernote – and that requires Internet Access or at least email.woman-on-laptop

One of the best ways to get mobile Internet access is through the phone. In our case, our plan allows us to hook up (or tether) the laptop to the phone and get online. I don’t carry a laptop anymore but my husband does. Because of this, we hardly have trouble getting Internet access on the go anymore. It was also a huge life saver when we had to suddenly admit our daughter in the hospital for 14 days.

The down side is, you have to maintain what cell phone carriers usually call a data plan and that is not cheap. At the time of writing for a single line plan, Sprint is charging about $65 a month. I am with Verizon – who bought Alltell so I am grandfathered in at a $90 a month everything included plan.

Technology wise, another alternative is to get one of those modems like MiFi or the Overdrive from Sprint. But those too run at least $60 a month.

Unfortunately there aren’t that many alternatives that don’t require you to sign on to a 2 year plan. The good news is, you could

  • Plan to stay at hotels with Wireless access.
  • Scope out wifi access points in the city you are traveling to. Many cafes even the small Main Street ones offer free wifi these days.

My only concern with connecting at these places is security. So you will always want to be careful. Someone told me once, they only check emails on these networks, they don’t do banking and anything like that so they aren’t worried. Well, that may be true but if you have ever lost your email account you will suddenly realize how much personal stuff is sent to you via email. And email accounts can be hijacked – a huge upset. I’ll write about this at a later date.

So yeah, even my email account I guard closely.

You know what the funny thing is? Why these companies don’t offer a pay-as-you-go data only plan. They may think that keeping you hooked monthly is earning them more but I think, I’d pay a little more for the convenience to get non-public Internet access whenever I need it.

Need An Errand? Get A Runner

Hey I just saw this posted on Twitter and thought I’d share. Very simple and kinda novel concept. Makes you want to smack your head and ask why didn’t I think of that.

If you have an errand you need run but can’t do it, you can go to Task Rabbit,  post your task with the amount you are willing to pay and runners will contact you to offer their help or counter offer. Once you all decide on the rate, you hire them to get the task done. You can also be a runner and earn some extra pocket money.

Too bad there are so limited markets at the moment, only San Francisco and Boston. But from what I understand this is a start-up so it might likely expand given time.

Duracell Instant Power Charger only $7.99

Just saw this dealio come in and can’t help but pass it on. This Duracell charger normally retails for about $30. There is an instant savings that brings it down to $12.99 but, if you use this coupon code DLO3031 during checkout it will bring it down some more to $7.99. The catch? Coupon code is only good if ordered through this link. And, the deal is only good today June 25 through June 28 or until stocks last.

I’d order a few if I were you. The product has pretty good reviews. Here’s what one mom had to say.

For a working mom who has kids in multiple sports I am always forgetting to charge the video and or the digital camera or even my cell phone. Often going straight from work to games during the week after spending all weekend at sports tournaments. Needless to say I bought two of these 3 months ago and they are life savers! They charge ANYTHING that has USB charging capability quickly and completely and multiple times! I LOVE THIS ITEM and came back to buy several more for family and friends, because originally I thought I could share mine with my kids, but I use them too much, dont want to part with them! – source: TigerDirect.com reviews

In this video the guy also says it would charge his iPhone fully twice.

10 Free Things To Do Online With Your Kids

Obviously children (and us too) can get lost on the Internet for hours without us interacting with each other. But instead of viewing it as a bad habit. Why not sit down the the little ones to do something together online? We also made sure these are free so no expenses involved. Here are some ideas.

  1. Find a recipe to make together
It is always so much fun to cook with the kids. Look up a recipe together to find something totally new not in your cookbooks. It will also help kids learn to search for information, and expose them to good websites.
  2. Challenge each other to a game
So many games to play together. Shockwave.com itself has plenty – you definitely want to be with them generally they are pretty clean. My little ones love to play the dentist and spa game. You can take turns playing and see if you can beat each others score for a prize of ice cream.
  3. Watch a movie together
Did you know sites like Hulu have full feature length movies that are totally kid friendly? Some examples are Puss In Boots and The Emperor’s New Clothes. Sure some are pretty old but hey it is free.
  4. Write a blog together
Blogs are so easy to start and free too! You can always go to Blogger.com or WordPress.com to get started.
  5. Find a craft to make
So many crafts, so many ideas online. Part of the fun is choosing a craft together.
  6. Read a free book together
You know I love eBooks. There are tons of classics and not-so classic ebooks out there. In Gutenberg.org itself, I am always coming across books appropriate for tweens and teenagers. Plus, since many of the books were written so long ago, I’ve always found them to be pretty clean. No foul language or explicit suggestions. Mysteries are the best – of course, I am biased here.
  7. Research things to do together like plan an outing or find local attractions and events
This ought to be fun. Teach them how to do local search and read maps and make their own local ‘tour’.
  8. Watch video clips together
There’s of course YouTube which you have to watch like a hawk. If your child is older and perhaps you want some more stimulating material, check out TED.
  9. Look at Flickr pictures together
Pick a topic that might be educational e.g. Sequoia trees then research all about the trees online
  10. Bid on an auction together
While spending is not always a good thing, but spending wisely is. Show them how to spot deals, look for something they want and learn to buy it cheaper than regular retail.

So summer is in full swing and reading programs are popping up all over the place. Incidentally, I am at the library right now writing this. Gotta love technology.

Usually, taking the kids to the library, registering them for reading programs is something moms do. But dads can certainly pitch in. Who says you have to be in a structured reading program?

We found this Dad’s Playbook: Coaching Kids To Read guide. In it, are several stories from other dads how they coach their kids on reading. Plus wonderful ideas for learning new vocabulary, word play and just have lots of fun, quality time as well.

It is a PDF so you will need Adobe Reader or any PDF reader to open the file. Click to download the Coaching Kids To Read playbook. It is 100% free.
