I Want Self Closing Refrigerator Doors

by daraperak

For moms with kids old enough to ransack the refrigerator. Here’s a question. Is one of pet peeves finding the refrigerator door open for God knows how long? Well, it is for this mom. I see red everytime the door is open for longer than it has to be. And sometimes the kids are not the culprit if ya know what I mean.

Today, I saw a commercial for a new refrigerator with self closing doors. I want that. But at the same time it makes me wonder, it couldn’t have taken them that long to figure that out. Maybe there’s already some kind of auto refrigerator door closer thingamajig that’s in the market now. If they can make something for regular doors this should not be a problem right?

Alas, my Googles only returned a bunch of stuff for commercial refrigerators. Do you know of a gadget like this?

Man that would be nice if there was one. I’ve got four kids so my hands are always full or they’ve got food in them and children under foot. I’d love a fridge that shut by itself, or made sure it was shut.

Hello homemom3, yup me too. Unfortunately, the ones I’ve found are for commercial freezers. I can’t believe no one has created this yet. Don’t think it’s rocket science. If they can create door closers for regular doors should not be a problem for refrigerator doors. Still looking. Anyone know?

I’m looking too. I have a daughter with autism that knows how to open doors but doesn’t know how to close them. I’ll be one of the first in line to purchase a self closing mechanism for home use. I’m also looking for the same self closing idea for kitchen cabinets and drawers.

Hey Carolyn, isn’t it weird that this thing is so hard to find or nobody has made one yet? Hmm… maybe some enterprising mom will read this.

Oh yeah I could absolutely use this.

Maybe we should make one ;)

Try raising the front of the refrigerator slightly, using either the adjustable feet on the unit or a piece of 1/4″ plywood underneath the front feet. If the unit is tilted back slightly, gravity will close the door if it is left open. I manage the blood bank at the animal hospital I work for, and I use this method for our blood product refrigerator and freezer to make sure the doors aren’t accidentally left open. It seems to work well, and does not compromise the function of the units. Hope this helps! :)

Lalena! That’s excellent. Sounds like something my mom would do great improvisation! Sometimes the solutions are so simple. Now I wonder if I can get hubs to agree to let me do that.
