Once You Know, You Newegg

Now that’ll likely motivate me to exercise more. A couple of University of Stirling students in Scotland has won themselves an entrepreneurship award for their prototype. The system uses stationary bikes and rowing machines to power gym lights.

Of course the gym has many more people working out to make the idea pay off, purportedly reducing energy bills as much as 20%. But hey… if I can power my own laptop or my mp3 player while exercising that’ll save me some $$ from getting all those batteries. Besides, if you have an inactive older child… here’s another chore while keeping healthy :-D (do you hear this mom’s cunning laugh?).

On a serious note, if we could create our own power by exercising and storing that power somehow, I think more people would be healthier today. Maybe there will come a day when you can tell your child exercise or no power today :)

We can save gasoline by riding bikes, as I have for the past 19 years. With several 70-km rides, I will never need a car. I have biked to San Francisco 20 times, to Gilroy twice, to Santa Cruz, Oakland, Half Moon Bay, and Sausalito once each. Bikes need to be advertised as a fun alternative to cars, video games, and TV.
  • Oh that is awesome! See what cool stuff smart people can come up with?

LOL I thought it was only me! I dunno... when I was in my twenties, I had a trainer, worked out 3-5 days a week religiously. It did indeed feel good then but now after having 'aged' a little heh ;) I feel that is no longer true for me as well.

I can't recommend those reading lights enough. They are a heaven sent. I've brought it to motel rooms, my kids and I use it, we use it as a flash light - the way it sits and the light turns, it frees up our hands to work on things. It's awesome.

Doesn't matter how much electricity is saved by exercising with this new gadget, it's all about getting motivated to do it! And of course we all know that exercising does give us more energy--at least that's what all the docs say. Me? Well, I'm always exhausted afterwards and want to eat something high in sugar and calories. Can't win!

Meanwhile I want one of those reading lights. Maybe two or three! Now there's one for the entrepreneur award.
  • That is cool ! I really like that idea :) particularly if you could store the energy for later use, so if you are feeling particularly fit one day you could store it up for a lazy day...
