Loving My Palm TX

Sunday, July 15th, 2007

Received my new palm last week and haven’t been able to put it down! OK so it’s not exactly brand new. Got it used with keyboard and extended warranty thrown in. Less than a year old. My very first used Palm. Still, it’s a beautiful machine and oh so functional.

Wifi feature is going to solve many problems for me. Being able to watch video and listen to MP3’s is a real treat. I’ve even downloaded and converted a few work videos and watched it. Not bad video at all.

This is my first blog post on it. Can you can tell I’m excited?

I Paid For It Now Let Me Have My Movie/Music

Thursday, May 17th, 2007

A bit bored last weekend, I decided to try out Amazon Unbox. I got really excited because they supported the Archos AV700 portable media player which I love. Thinking it was a good deal since I could unload it to the player, I could take the show and let my kids watch it wherever we go. Well I haven’t had luck loading it on (and I’m no dummy).

Now, I find the songs I purchased through Walmart.com music download a while back won’t work - I can’t even import the license! Walmart support is just horrible. They asked me to fill in a bunch of questions to submit a help ticket and when they replied they asked for that information all over again.

The entertainment industry seriously is soooooo daft. Hey, I have no trouble paying for the movie/music whatever but now you make me jump through 10 million hoops to use what I paid for - is it any wonder people are flocking to find illegal downloads.

Argh! I’m SO upset now.

Some Things Are Best On Paper

Thursday, May 10th, 2007

As crazy as I am with technology, there are some things that just don’t work right electronically - in my opinion. Take for example Sudoku (are you a Sudoku fan too?). I’m so engrossed with this puzzle and sometimes spend hours on weekends just doing puzzle after puzzle, on paper.

I find it easier to solve on paper because you can write down all the possibilities and see clearly what to rule out or rule in. This unique capability is lost on the electronic versions. That doesn’t mean I haven’t been tempted, but after a quick think - nah. Give me paper.

The Apple TV Lure

Saturday, April 14th, 2007

So moms, have you succumbed to the Apple TV yet? I remember when Tsoniki talked about this a little while back, we were really excited. I’m still rather intrigued with it and the pricing is not too bad. But the only thing stopping me at the moment is it only works with iTunes. Which means I can’t watch any other movie I may have on my computer - a huge bummer. Can you tell I don’t like to be tied to one technology?

Update Your Computer In Time For Daylight Savings

Saturday, March 10th, 2007

One short day to go before we have to turn our clocks forward. But DST comes early this year. Will your computer know it?

If you’re not sure, run a system’s update right now. For those on PC, go to Start >> All Programs >> Windows Update. Or you could download the update from Microsoft.

On the Mac, it’s System Preference >> Software Update

While you’re doing this, don’t forget your other tools too. If you run Outlook or Office there are a bunch of updates. If you have Windows mobile, Palm or whatever PDA’s please check the manufacturer’s site. Not sure about phones though.

Archos AV700E Review

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

A while back, I blogged about my dream gadget - the Archos AV700E. Not long after that, I decided to plunk down some cash for it. It’s been about 6 months since I’ve got it. The final verdict? Love it.

So, let’s back up a bit, if you’re not sure what I’m talking about. The Archos AV700E is a portable media recorder and player. I like to think of it as my portable digital VCR because that’s exactly how I use it. If you have TiVo, you know how it feels.

While this little thing is not exactly TiVo, but I love it mainly because of portability. We used to have a set top type DVD recorder. Problem is, sometimes we want to record from another room and we have this huge hassle of moving, unplugging cables etc.

The Archos has also helped me save several DVD disks. Instead of allowing my kids to destroy the disks, I just record the movies. Not all movies are recordable though - it’s got a built in mechanism to not record protected material.

Finally, this thing is awesome on road trips. Pricey, yes useful for us, absolutely.

CD Scratch Protector Conceptually Good But…

Friday, February 16th, 2007

While in Wal-Mart, I came across the d_skin, a cd scratch protector. Well actually not only for CD’s but discs in general. It’s like a plastic cover you slip over the bottom part of your discs. I thought it was an awesome idea and picked up a set of 10. I wanted to pick up more but my brother said, you don’t know how well it’s going to work so let’s try it out and so I did.

When a friend, Barb blogged about it recently recently, it reminded how much I didn’t like the d_skin. The reason I bought them was so my kids won’t mess up those oh so very expensive DVD’s we buy them. But the d_skin keeps falling off. Just a light touch and these things slip right off - kinda defeats the purpose. Other than that, at one time, I put in a DVD and it kept spinning, not recognizing the disc. Took the sleeve off and the disc worked.

They just didn’t work out for me. I resorted to making backup copies of the DVD’s.
