Easy Email On the Go

For a long time I’ve wanted to be able to email on the go.  However, I don’t have a smart phone and the usage charges for that service through my cell phone provider are outrageous anyhow.  So, I’ve just done without. However, I just discovered a new option that I am excited about.  This easy option for emailing on the go is inexpensive,  and it is a gadget, much like a smart phone that will allow me to email, Tweet, and even text my friends.  I can get rid of the texting feature on my cell phone and stop paying such a high bill.

This gadget, called the Peek Mobile E-mail Device (Gray) provides what I’ve been looking for in a sleek little electronic hand-held machine.

Some of the positives are:

  • Unlimited email for one flat rate.
  • No contracts.
  • Large, easy to read screen.

So, I’m hoping a Peek is in my future what about you?

Give a Laptop, Get a Laptop

You may be considering getting your child a laptop for Christmas.  If you are then you might want to check out the opportunity to not only give your child a laptop, but a child living in a remote area in another part of the world as well.

The Give a Laptop, Get a Laptop campaign does just that.  For $399 you can give a laptop to one of those children , as well as get a laptop for your own child.  The XO Laptop (Give a Laptop, Get a Laptop)
built especially for this campaign, is made specifically for children.  It is preloaded with free, open source software and has the capacity to do all the things you will want your child to do while using it including educational games and Internet capability.

It also gives them the ability to write, draw, edit music and record audio.  There seems to be endless possibilities for your child with the XO laptop, as well as the opportunity to give to another child who would otherwise never have the opportunities that this laptop brings.

Mini Laptop, an Affordable Alternative.

I recently purchased a desktop after my beloved laptop died on me.  I had several reasons for buying a desktop over another laptop at the time,  one was it was affordable, and then I thought it would help me manage my computer time more.  Both were true, but I can’t help but wish for my laptop these days, however I really can’t afford another computer, or can I?  I recently began seeing alot of online moms raving about the Acer Mini Laptop .  Not only is it functional, small and packed with power, but it is also “affordable”, retailing for under $500 in most stores online and off.

Now, I don’t know about you, but for me this sounds like an affordable alternative that I can not only afford but enjoy.  It won’t have to be my main computer, but since I spent less on it I can feel okay about getting it and using it when I want the freedom that a laptop gives from being tied down to my desk.  Also, it will be handy to have when we travel too.

So, if you’re needing an alternative to a desktop or to a more pricey laptop then you should check into the mini varieties.

Ipod Touch

My brother recently bought an Ipod Touch and now I”m thinking this is a gadget this mom might have to splurge on, or at least add to my Christmas wish list.  Allowing you to access the Internet, games, your favorite music, movies and videos at the touch of its sleek little screen is fascinating to me.

Just a few months back I noticed a fellow passenger on an airplane with one as she watched episodes of one of her obviously favorite shows for the entire ride.  I was a bit jealous then that she had entertainment at her fingertips and I had nothing.

So, that’s one reason this little gadget is appealing to me, being able to carry around not only my favorite tunes, but videos and the ability to access the Internet via WiFi from anywhere.  That’s a plus in itself.  And this little gadget is something I’m certain any mom could enjoy.

Tux Paint Buys Mom Some Quiet Time

010 Instead of sending my kids online where I don’t know what they will click on and where they end up, I decided to download Tux Paint for them. At first, I was a little concerned that my youngest will not be able to use this but that flew out the window the moment we launched Tux Paint.

This is a free drawing software for kids. It is quite a bit of fun – even for me as an adult. On their web site, you can view a gallery of what kids have done with it. The older kids really create beautiful pictures. For the younger ones like my PK’er, it is just entertaining. She loves using the different brushes and shapes, but by far, her favorite tool in this program are the stamps.

Available for Windows, Mac, Linux and a host of other operating systems. My kiddos love to draw on it and that makes mom happy especially when I need a few quiet moments.

Find That Book

find-book We live in a small town. Our local library is small and half of the time, doesn’t carry what you want. The good news is, we share books among other libraries in the county so eventually you’ll find the book, you just have to wait. A few years ago, I could do to the library web site to search and reserve the book but now, I don’t even get the search anymore. Yeah like going back wards.

I was very excited to find Worldcat. Worldcat searches over 10,000 libraries world wide. Once you find the title, you enter your zip code – it also tries to guess based your IP I think – and it will pull up the nearest libraries who carry that book.

Sadly for me, the two books I was looking for is only available in libraries 50 miles away and whom I have no access to :( oh well. At least now I kno w and will put the book in my to-buy list. As for Worldcat, it is going in my bookmarks.

Wouldn’t you like to know what electronics are cost you the most money? Did you know all plugged in electronics still drain watts while turned off? Kill A Watt PS allows you to see what each electronic device is costing you. Plug your electronics into the built in surge protector then Kill A Watt PS will determine how efficient they are. Living in an area where hurricanes can hit, surge protectors are a must for all electronics, but to know which ones to un-plug when you are done using them is a bonus.

You will now be able to know how much your computer or home theater system is using. The Kill A Watt PS checks the quality of your power, monitors line frequency, the amperage, KWH, and if there is any current leakage. It comes with a 6′ Foot cord, with six regular outlets and two wide outlets.
