Reading Adobe Digital Edition eBooks On Android

image

Months ago, I came across NetGalley and was totally excited. Why? Because you can request books to review before they are published.

Now I love to read and this sounds like a good proposition. So I signed up but had no intentions of reading on the computer. See, I’m a bed time reader and because I’ve been reading so much with the Kindle app, I thought I could put these books on there too.

Unfortunately, no. NetGalley only supports Kindle the device. Not the app. *Sidebar, companies do need to starting giving more accurate info before people sign up and request books.

But I did figure out how to read these DRM protected eBooks on the Kindle. First, I had to install the Aldiko reader on the Android. The following instructions are the same as on Aldiko’s site.

Download the protected .acsm to your Android and using a file explorer like ASTRO, find the file then tap to open. It will download and be automatically added to Aldiko reader. Well that sounded simple enough so I did just that. But alas nothing happened it just won’t download.

Turns out, it was because I was using ESFileExplorer. That app does’nt recognize acsm files. I had to download and install ASTRO and that did the trick. Seems like Aldiko should update their documentation to say use ASTRO. A definitive instead of like ASTRO. Or maybe provide a list of file explorers that has been known to work.

Oh well, I can read those files now. Not optimal. It is still awkward and doesn’t flow properly but I’ll take that over being stuck on my computer.

Must Read Before Getting An Android Tablet

It’s the day after Thanksgiving which is also… Black Friday. I had heard news there would be sub-$100 tablets and ebook readers making their way into the market this weekend but I am quite surprised at the number of stores offering them. You’ll find these iPad looking tablets and Kindle/Nook knock offs in all kinds of stores from the local drug store to chains. Very interesting. Many of them will be powered by Android too.

Well, as an Android tablet owner, (I’m blogging from the tablet now). I feel I’ve a need to share some information with you before you put your money down on one of these tablets. $100 or not, you need to know this.

First of all, just because it is Android does not automatically mean you will have access to the Android Market – the app store. This is because Market has to be programmed in by the manufacturers. So if you purchase an unheard of brand tablet that mostly comes directly out of China and you don’t know if they will support it, then you may never get Market.

Why is Market so crucial?
Because it is the main way to get the most popular apps for Android. This is not like your computer where you can go to the app site and download a file to install. You can and I’ll explain it shortly but many – far too many app developers or companies offering apps do not have a download link for the app. They will link to Market. For example the Kindle and Nook, you can only get it via Market.

Now this is not to say it is impossible to get it. You can search the Internet for the app’s APK file. There are some kind souls who upload these apps outside Market so you can download and install it manually to your tablet – this is called sideloading. But these are quite hard to come by. Also, you would be wise to be a little wary of the apps you receive – who knows what they include? And if you can’t find that app outside, you’re out of luck and your experience as well as enjoyment of the tablet is severely limited.

Trust me on that one because originally our tablet didn’t have Market either and I was beginning to seriously doubt my purchase. But once we got Market on there it is like a whole new world opened up and now I TOTALLY love this tablet, quirks and all.

The other thing you want to know is don’t get a tablet if it still says Android 1.6. The latest Android is 2.2 unless you are quite sure the manufacturers will support it.

If you don’t really care about everything I wrote and don’t mind getting your hands dirty, you can rely on fantastic forums online to guide and perhaps get OS upgrades. The forum I wholly recommend is SlateDroid.com. However, you better put your geek hat on, this is not for the faint hearted because it could mean you have to flash your tablet – which could brick it. Touch wood I’ve flashed mine 3 times and still going well.

Hopefully this helps someone :)

2 Free But Great Home Design Software

Do you like to re-decorate or simply switch things around your home once in a while? The bad thing about that is, it takes time and muscles who may not be so cooperative when you are in the middle of makeover fever. For times like that, perhaps it would be helpful to virtually re-design your home using software. It will let you move things around, change your wall colors to your hearts’ desire without all the hard work and when you do get down to business, you may get better results.

Here are two home design software we found that would work. Thankfully, they are free too.

Sweet Home 3D – this is a downloadable software that is open source and it runs on Windows, Mac, Solaris and Linux. Pretty interesting. Take a look at their video demo it looks quite easy to use.

Autodesk Homestyle – this is a web based home design software so it works on many operating systems that run flash. It is free at time of writing.

If Facebook Privacy Changes Worry You, You’ll Want To Know And Fix This

Spy There’s been a lot of talk about Facebook privacy changes recently. I think this is the double edged sword about Facebook. Everything they do and will do in the future will be scrutinized for privacy loopholes. As it should. The most recent change about Places really got people worried. How your friends can ‘check you in’ as being present at a place.

I can see where this can turn out to be disastrous. But really, you don’t need Facebook to give your location away. I am not talking about disclosing your location voluntarily via Twitter or Foursquare either. I’m talking about information you may not be aware you are sharing in your photos.

Yes, photos.

  • Did you know that many smart phones save the exact location (down to the longitude and latitude) where your pictures are taken?
  • And did you know that you could be openly broadcasting this information on photo sharing websites?

With each photo snapped on your smart phone, you could be saving, storing and sharing all this data all over the Internet. This makes it quite easy for anyone to well… stalk us. Here are full details and how to fix this issue on your phone.

Visual Bible Study And Word Search Tool

Have you seen WordBloom? It is a really neat tool when you’re doing bible study or want to look up words, related words and where they might also appear on the bible.

You can start with a verse and it will pull up the words in that verse and display related words. As you click on each word, you will find other related words and a list of verses that also contain the word. Pretty interesting. I can probably get lost in a tool like that.

I imagine it would be particularly helpful when you’re trying to think of a verse, for educators, and church leaders.

The tool is not free though. It costs $37 a year which is not too bad. If you want to check it out they also have a trial. You’ll want to go to their home page.

Let me know what you think.

KitchenAid Foam Soap Dispenser

On a whim while browsing through Lowes one day, I splurged on a foam soap dispenser from KitchenAid. I’m really not the type to buy anything like that especially something that cost $10. I’m more likely to re-use those dinky plastic dispensers that come with hand soap. But I thought it would save money because it promised to work with a solution of 10% soap to 90% water. Wow. That would be huge long term savings.

I brought it home, loaded it with a 10 to 1 solution and was immediately delighted! It was awesome.

Sadly for me, it didn’t last but one month. I do not know if I got a dud, or whether someone in the family didn’t realize it and filled it with all soap solution or if it’s just a poor quality product. I would certainly get another one if I can get it for a song. In the mean time, back to my dinky plastic dispenser.

What To Talk To Your Kids About

So, some people are naturally highly attuned to kids. They are able to get in the kids’ zones and get down with them, play and talk easily. Me, I’m the type of parent who needs more help. In particular, what to talk to the children about.wpurltbt-005

The good thing is, my kids are so talkative and tend to stretch out their explanation. Yet there are still times of awkward silence at the dinner table I absolutely hate that. Ugh. I can’t stand to eat in silence. Might as well eat alone.

Today this TableTopics thing caught my eye. What a great idea! It’s a box of cards with some conversation starters like:

  • Is it more fun to be a parent or a child
  • Would you rather live for a week in the past or the future
  • What family or school rule would you most like to change

These are awesome! And it can help us really understand our kids at a deeper level too. The cube costs $25. Great for the uninspired (like me).

On the other hand, I suspect this is something that you could also create on your own with a card box and a bunch of index cards. Maybe let the children add their own topics to discuss too.
