iPhone vs Palm Centro Which Should I Get?

Categories: Electronics

palm-centroWhat can be better than the iPhone? You probably know by now I am a big Palm fan. I’ve been using it since forever.

I can still picture myself trying to get on the Internet using a modem that attaches to the Palm VII at the airport. Yup, seriously did that and had lots of stares – probably thought I was crazy to want to get connected everywhere I go.

That was my very first unit. Since then, I’ve owned 3 different models. With the latest Palm TX, I also invested pretty heavily into software. Software that I rely on every day to manage my home and business.

iphoneOne of them is Natara’s Bonsai – an outliner which I use as my GTD system. It also has a desktop version so when I’m at the desk I enter my to do’s there. If I go iPhone, I will lose this lifeline. Sure, I can start using RememberTheMilk or some other cool web based GTD systems with the iPhone but I don’t want to switch and get used to yet another
system. Especially a system that just doesn’t ‘bond’ with me.

Not deterred, I did a quick search to find out how people do GTD on their iPhones and to me the results just weren’t that encouraging. With Apple controlling most of the software I expect this is not going to be top priority for them. I really like the fact there are so many third party applications I can get for the Palm.

On the other hand the iPhone of course is uber cool and a tad cheaper every month too – imagine that! Besides, my Palm TX totally spoiled me with it’s bigger screen. The Centro’s screen is smaller, making it feel like downsizing.

So what do you think? What should I put on my Christmas wish list?

I have the palm centro. I loved until it went into hotsync on its own. A known problem with the centro according to sprint. There's nothing they can do but replace it. I've had it replaced 3 times since April. Sprint is now sending me the instinct. Hoefully I will have better luck with the instinct.

I have been using the Samsung i500 (discontinued Palm flip phone) for about 5 years or more. I love this phone and would not even be considering another phone, except for the fact that it has a crack on the hinges and I don't think it is going to last much longer. Accessories are no longer available for it and I can receive text messages, but cannot send them, so I feel WAY out of the loop. My husband insisted that I give the Instinct a try, even though I knew I would not be happy with the calendar feature. I have been using the Instinct for 2 full weeks and I am taking it back and getting some sort of Palm phone. If you need the calendar feature to manage your life (like I do) you will not be happy with the instinct. Nothing compares to the calendar features of the Palm and the ease of use. I love the Instinct for all its other great features and I really wanted it to work out, but I have definitely decided to trade it in for a Palm. The only other thing that I don't really like about the Instinct is that it goes into a "sleep mode" after about 30 seconds (which I believe you can set for slightly longer) so you can't just pick up the phone and use it...you have to hold down the "on/off" key for about 2-3 seconds before you can do anything other than answer or ignore a call or an alarm. I understand the purpose is to save on the battery, but I find it very annoying. Other than that, the Instinct and I have had a lot of fun - but I guess deep down I am a Palm junkie.

No doubt that Palm OS i unbeatable.
I own a Centro and a TX with an external gps receiver and believe me, no smartphone or PDA compares to them. You can do everything, and you are sure they'll do it well and smartly.

So, let only the daft people to buy the overrated Iphone and you'll do yourself a big favor. :)

Hi. Umm... well the only thing with the Palm is that you can't get on internet... and the buttons are always really small. Same with the iPhone though. It is really hard to use the buttons on the iPhone. I have an iPhone but it still is amazing that i could sell my iPod! It is seriously like my iPod and my phone! It's great! So I would say iPhone!

hmm can you not put both down on your list ;) Actually I was just making my own list for Santa and am in the VERY early stages of checking out PDA's and am leaning towards Palm, I was actually looking at the TX even though it's not top of the range it probably means I can get it a little cheaper, I have to say I'm not a huge fan of integrated phone and PDA for some reason I prefer to keep them separate but as you said the IPhone is very cool, I don't think it's here yet though? not 100% certain but don't think it's officially here till after Christmas although some people claim to have been able to hack it to use it here, it's in the UK alright.

Hey all, thanks for the input. I'm really surprised and at the same time very encouraged to hear there are still Palm fans like me out there.

As mentioned before, I purchased an HTC Mogul which I really like but am sooooo used to Palm OS's simplicity. There's just too much clicking on Windows Mobile. Now I'm not a Windows or Microsoft basher. I use what works for me.

However I do enjoy my new phone and being able to get online. Yet... I hang on to my Palm TX dearly, still using it every single day from reading ebooks to managing other stuff.

You *can* get the centro with unlimited data usage on a cheaper monthly plan than the iphone, if you switch to sprint. $30/mo for 500 anytime minutes, free nights/weekends, and unlimited data. Google "sprint sero" (sprint employee referral discount) if you are interested.

Hey Hanna

You can get online with the Palm. I've done it :) but you're right on the keyboard though.

Well, I ended up with neither of them :) I got an HTC Mogul with a slide out QWERTY keyboard. Only thing is, I am having a tough time transitioning from Palm OS to Windows Mobile :(

Hey Darina,

I wish I could have both on my list but my wallet just won't support them. Like you, I initially do not like the thought of phone/PDA integrated. I've mentioned that many times on this blog itself. But now, the phone part of it is more for getting online. The TX has truly spoiled me. Having a mini internet that fits in my very small pocket book is very attractive. I love the ability to Twitter or post to blogs, forums etc from anywhere in my home. Without lugging a laptop.

But now I want to take it a step further, hence what better way than a smartphone? I could of course get a blue tooth enabled phone and use that in conjunction with my TX but that would mean getting a new phone as my current one does not support it. So... why not just start with a clean slate know what I mean?

Still undecided, but leaning to the Palm Centro. Good reviews, I'm familiar with it, Palm OS is a good and dependable stable system even though it is a little old. Plus being heavily invested in it, sticking to Palm seems to make the most sense.
