Kitchen Compost Bin – NatureMill

Categories: Kitchen Gadgets

nature-millSure, you don’t need fancy schmancy gadgets to make compost. But if you want to do it right from your kitchen minus the unpleasant odors NatureMill might do the job. I saw this in a documentary tonight. Pretty cool. You use it just like the trash can in your kitchen.

I really like the idea of scraping food left on plates into this cool compost bin than the trash can. Even though we teach our kids about eating everything they put on their plate, they still waste their food. The thought of recycling that food which will help us grow more of our own food is very attractive to me.

Not to mention, we’ve spent so much money growing and fertilizing our lawn every year it’s insane! Self made compost helps our wallet in so many ways. Besides, it’s yet another way to be good stewards of our precious earth.

Talking about being green, the manufacturers claim NatureMill only uses 5kwh per month which is about $0.50/month. They say it’s “less than a garbage truck would burn in diesel fuel to haul the same waste” which I don’t doubt. It is also made from recyclable materials.

I also took the opportunity to check out the prices of their accessories. It required a filter to keep odors away. You need to change the filter about 4-5 years – not bad. The filter only costs $8 which is pretty reasonable. The trays and sawdust pellets (optional) are all under $10. Only the power adapter is over $10. That sits very well with me. I hate to buy something really cool and helpful only to be gouged on accessories.

I talked to hubs about this. At $299, the price is steep. But we think it’ll pay off. This one is one green gadget that is going into our “To Buy” list.

@Hooi Imm

True, but you'd have to manually 'fold' it I think that's what it's called and mess with once in a while. Plus the odors :-P

Hey thanks for the tag!

Kinda pricey. You can also just put the compost in a bin outside the house. Free :-)

Btw, you're tagged on an interesting topic. I believe we have discussed it before at CHL.

Hey Carrie that should be added to your what moms want list ;)

Darina, I am a rookie when it comes to compost. First I'm no green thumb. Just not that type... had no idea you can't put in cooked food... or do you not do that because of the odor? Forgive me for such a elementary silly question.

Was watching Dirty Jobs on Discovery Channel the other day and they had him working in a commercial compost place. The guy who owns it says it's called "Black Gold" and apparently earn good money from this.
